Speaking up on Law Society and justice-system issues that affect equity, inclusion, and women in the profession.
AWL advances its mission through advocacy when policies or proposals touch the advancement, equality, and well-being of women in the legal profession and the wider justice system. The board tracks developments at the Law Society of Alberta and elsewhere and encourages members to engage when their voices matter.
In early 2023, AWL urged members to participate in a Law Society special meeting on a resolution to repeal Rule 67.4, under which Benchers may prescribe specific continuing professional development, including cultural competency education. AWL opposed repeal because it could weaken Benchers’ ability to mandate that education and could signal to equity-seeking groups that reconciliation and inclusion were not priorities for the profession.
AWL emphasized support for Indigenous cultural competency training in line with Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #27, and that practising law is a privilege that includes seeking to understand cultural bias and its impact on professional duties.
AWL is volunteer-led. Membership connects you to events, mentoring, student outreach, and committees, whether you want to attend, host, or help shape programming.
