Association of Women Lawyers

President's Message

Rebecca Brown
President 2010

Welcome to the Association of Women Lawyers.

The weather is getting warmer, the snow is almost all melted and our thoughts are turning towards the many spring and summer activities that await us. With that, the AWL is eagerly anticipating another great year for our association and has been working hard to bring you a variety of activities and events.

So far this year, the AWL board and members have been pursuing athletic endeavours by being busy in the mountains with a handful of snowshoeing excursions and in the indoor climbing centre practicing their bouldering and belaying techniques.

The AWL is excited to host a Celebrity Luncheon on April 14, 2010 at the Westin Hotel featuring a keynote address delivered by the legal counsel representing the women ski jumpers who sued VANOC for their right to participate in the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

In addition to upcoming yak and snaks, our spring celebration, the golf tournament, and various lunch and learns, we are also in the midst of planning an event to be held sometime in May to honour the founding members of the AWL for their initiative and dedication in establishing a forum for women lawyers to meet and interact on both a professional and social level.

One of our more popular events lately has been the Annual Fall Retreat held in October or November each year at the Rimrock Resort Hotel in Banff. With a stimulating variety of guest speakers, excellent cuisine, fun recreational activities and relaxation time to network, this is a must if you haven’t attended one yet.

The AWL Annual General Meeting is held each year in December and offers an opportunity for our members, over a complimentary luncheon and a glass of wine, to elect the new Board of Directors, review our financial status, review our past year’s activities and hear about special projects and what is planned for the upcoming year.

Our AWL Board is working hard to make AWL a success and to ensure it is responsive to the needs of women in the legal profession. We welcome your ideas and comments to help make AWL an organization that is right for you.

We look forward to seeing you at the various functions slated for 2010. Please remember that AWL welcomes your ideas, comments and suggestions as to how we can better serve women in the legal profession. Feel free to contact me directly at president@awlcalgary.ca
