Welcome

To promote the advancement, interests, equality and well being of women in the legal profession.

Our Mission

As set out in our Mission Statement, the Association of Women Lawyers ("AWL") is an organization committed to promoting the advancement, equality, interests and well being of women in the legal profession.

To meet these stated objectives we organize and sponsor a number of events every year offering the membership educational, networking and social opportunities that will appeal to the diverse interests we represent.

Events

We hold a "Lunch and Learn" program twice a year.  We select a speaker who we believe has knowledge and expertise that would be of interest to the AWL membership.  In recent years our lunch and learn seminars covered a wide range of topics, such as financial planning, investment strategies, alternative career opportunities and gender issues in the workplace.

Each year we hold a fundraising event in the form of a spring luncheon, which is open to the whole legal community in Calgary. We invite a celebrity speaker to speak about specialized and current topics that are of interest to the legal community at large.

Each spring AWL sponsors a complimentary luncheon event to honour women lawyers who were admitted to the Calgary Bar in the past year. This luncheon provides a networking opportunity to the newly admitted women lawyers as well as an introduction to the AWL and our members. We invite a distinguished member of the legal profession as a guest speaker to greet the new women lawyers and welcome them to the practice of law.

We also organize a golf tournament every summer, a popular and a very well attended event.  The tournament is intended for fun and recreation and players (and non-players) of all skill levels are welcome to attend.  We end the day with a dinner at the clubhouse and all participants leave with armful of prizes every year.

The AWL Annual General Meeting is held each year in December and offers an opportunity for our members, over a complimentary luncheon, to elect the new board of directors, review our financial status, review our past year activities and hear about special projects and what is planned for the upcoming year.

Our AWL Board is working hard to make AWL a success and to ensure it is responsive to the needs of women in the legal profession. We welcome your ideas and comments to help make AWL an organization that is right for you.
